Favorite Photo: A Serene Day in Soverato
Another day of favorite photos. Please welcome Cherrye from My Bella Vita who is going to share with us her summer spot where she took her nephew. Heaven indeed.
Last week I wrote about Le Castella, one of my favorite places in Calabria which also happens to be the
setting for one of my all-time favorite photos. I love the beach, castle and mystery that sound that fabulous
fortress … but today, I want to talk about something a little less mystifying and a few kilometers closer to
home.
The beach at Soverato .
There are about 15 kilometers of beaches between my home near Catanzaro Lido and Soverato, and truth be
told, I don’t actually go to those beaches too often.
Yes, they have tranquil warm waters and tan sandy shores but so do the ones closer to me … the ones just a
mile or two away, so those are the ones I head to when I have free beach time.
However, this year-with the excuse that my nine-year-old nephew was visiting-I headed a little farther away
and hit the sand in Soverato.
The water was perfect and I felt like Goldilocks-you know, not too hot, not too cold … everything just right?-
and it was a day I’ ll never forget.

This picture captures the tranquility of that day. The gold sand reflecting off of the water reminds me of the
warm sun that blazed above us as we picnicked on the beach. The water, changing from sheer and clear to
turtle green to aqua and azure are proof of how easily-and quickly-things change before our eyes. The few
black rocks, jutting from the tan sand are reminders that there is always something-or someone-willing to
stand strong and be our rock.
Am I over-thinking this picture?
Yes … . Quite possibly, I am.
But if you looked up, your eyes would hit the rugged coast, canopied with fluffy white marshmallow clouds
and you’d see that the ever-changing waters of the Ionian go on for miles and miles and miles. You’d realize
that even in a place where mystery and mystique aren’t obvious examples of a mythological past, that they
are indeed alive and well and they surround this land wherever one may look.
