Pedestrian ONLY in Piazza del Duomo

A new and improved Florence has arrived today.  In and around Piazza del Duomo will be closed off to cars, taxes or buses.  You can travel to the center of Florence only by foot and by bike.  Finally!  No more racing the buses and dodging taxis.  But what is coming next you might ask?  They will add the tram tracks and then the lovely tram to run past the north-side of the Duomo.  Ok, I am being a bit sarcastic, as I think the tram will not only bring more money to higher ups in Florence but it will make the city look odd, in my opinion.  I have no say in this and it will happen even if I say I don't like it.  So we must all except it the inevitable.  I am sure it will make the center more efficient and less congested.  The main point to maintain the precious art and architecture that surrounds the Duomo.  The exhaust from the buses and cars have made the Duomo look haggard over the years since it is not an easy building to clean all the time.

Many of the bus routes will be re-routed since a handful of the buses run just by the Duomo.  Check out the buses that are effected here.

They have been doing construction for this change every night starting from 9:30pm to 6am.  Yesterday, walking through the center I noticed some of the changes near the Duomo, where they blocked off the road that buses used to drive around.  And near the station, they are ready to open up the first Tramvia.  It is amazing how much this city has changed since I studied here.

Expect much chaos today where the new bus hub will be located at Piazza San Marco.  Oh it shall be a grand time!

a presto amici!

its clear you do not have to take a bus to work.now longer to get to work 7 minutes now 25-more traffic, pollution, frustration, senior citizens not able to get to the hospital and shopping not easy for them. closing the duomo benefits tourism but not the ordinary person living and working in Florence.
better planning, better communication with the residents would have been a good idea.
